Extrapolating data from short-term to long-term toxicity tests

A biology-based dynamic approach for the reconciliation of acute and chronic toxicity tests: Application to Daphnia magna

A lot of data is available describing how toxic a substance is under particular circumstances. If these data are integrated into coherent frameworks, it is possible to extend their applicability and extrapolation potential. Using test data from water fleas (Daphnia magna), JRC-IHCP researchers Jose-Manuel Zaldivar and Joaquin Baraibar evaluated whether it was possible to extrapolate from acute (short-term) to chronic (long-term) toxicity. This approach could easily be extended to other standardized test by replacing the D. magna DEB model with the corresponding species model (fish, birds, etc.). Reuse of data would reduce the time and costs of tests, as well as the number of animals necessary.
