EURL ECVAM releases progress report on the development, validation and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods

An overview of advances made since 2010 relevant to the safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients

The JRC's European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) has just released its progress report on the development, validation and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods that contribute to the Reduction, Refinement and Replacement (3Rs) of animal testing (available for download below).

The report summarises advances made since publication of the major review conducted in 2010[1] and describes the availability of methods with the potential to address information requirements (toxicological properties) of particular relevance to the safety assessment of cosmetic ingredients.

As described in a recent Commission Communication[2], on the 11th March 2013 a complete marketing ban came into force concerning cosmetics products which contain ingredients tested on animals after that deadline.
