On 12th of December 2011 the annual General Assembly of the FACET project took place in Brussels. The event marked the approaching conclusion of a 4-years work on "Flavourings, Additives and Food Contact Materials Exposure Task" (in short "FACET"), financially supported by the EU 7th Framework Programme and due to be completed in 2012.
The project has been relying on the contribution of 20 collaborative partners across the EU, coming from industrial, academic and public research centres. The ultimate objective is to deliver a food chemical exposure surveillance system which covers representative regions of the EU and which will meet, to the highest possible standard, the needs of the EU regulatory authorities in the protection of consumer health. The base for this will be an IT "exposure toolbox" for food additives and contaminants, which will be made publicly available at the end of the project.
As one of the FACET partners, the European Commission Joint Research Centre contributed to the production of experimental data to feed into the surveillance system.
After 2012, the JRC will act as "custodian" of the project's legacy, by hosting and managing the "exposure toolbox" and acting as a central contact point for potential future updates of the IT tool.
The JRC will also organize the final FACET dissemination Conference in mid 2012 (watch the IHCP website for news).
